Daniella Hantuchova., Maria Sharapova hit out
January 26, 2008
THE snarling, spiteful side of women’s tennis went on show yesterday as Daniela Hantuchova and Maria Sharapova let fly at their semi-final opponents.
Hantuchova took a furious swipe at Ana Ivanovic’s squeaky runners after the Serb fought back to win 0-6 6-3 6-4. And Sharapova became incensed at the medical time-out called by Jelena Jankovic during their semi-final, offering some advice as Jankovic received courtside treatment. “She should get on with tennis and stop whingeing,” Sharapova said as she waited at the courtside. Already well in control of a match she went on to win 6-3 6-1, Sharapova wasn’t going to let any interruptions stand in the way of her march to the final. As the match finished, the women exchanged lukewarm formalities at the net and the incident was never mentioned. But it was different for Slovakian Hantuchova after she lost a topsy-turvy match. KIRKLAND, Wash., Jan. 3 — The first time was a shock. Was it booing?
He looked up at the stands, unsure if he heard right. Read more

Swisher deal improves club for now, but not enough to justify its cost
Is Jerry Reinsdorf selling the White Sox after 2008? Is Ken Williams planning to do his job only one more year and then move on? Bruins apply finishing touch
January 4, 2008
There was a moment, about nine minutes before game’s end, when it occurred to the sellout crowd at Maples Pavilion that Stanford could beat UCLA. It came after a flurry of missed follow shots, and finally a short left-side runner from Mitch Johnson, and the crowd erupted with the kind of noise a UCLA-Stanford game should always have. And then it died - swiftly, surely and irrevocably. The Cardinal, a prime-time team for much of the last 15 years, found out that there’s prime, and then there’s prime. Read more

West Virginia Pulls Another Shocker and Hires Stewart
January 4, 2008
The West Virginia coaching search had every element of a melodrama. AP Selects Belichick As Coach of Year
January 4, 2008
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Patriots owner Robert Kraft needed just one season with Bill Belichick to know how good a coach he was. Even Kraft couldn’t have expected that, more than a decade later, his brilliant employee would accomplish what no NFL coach has ever done _ lead a team to a 16-0 record. “In this age of parity to go 16-0 when people are after our players, our administrative staff, our coaches,” Kraft said, “to be able to achieve this feat in an age of parity when everyone’s playing with the same budget is just a tremendous tribute to his management style.” Read more

While their high-powered offense was stymied most of the night, the Jayhawks came up with three interceptions and beat Virginia Tech 24-21 in the Orange Bowl to cap one of the finest seasons in school history. The turnovers led to 17 Kansas points, including Aqib Talib’s 60-yard return for the game’s first score. He was chosen the game’s most valuable player. “Everybody talks about Virginia Tech’s defense,” said safety Justin Thornton, who also had an interception. “We came out to show we can play defense at Kansas, too.” Read more
