What you see is what you get in reigning Cup champ Johnson

February 15, 2008

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Jimmie Johnson wandered over to the mint dish on the hostess stand at La Crepe en Haut on Thursday night and began picking through all the colors. Jimmie Johnson’s not going to apologize for a lack of controversy in his life.

Red. Yellow. Blue.

He finally disappeared to his table, only to return a few seconds later to look over his choices again before returning to his wife and guests. Moments later, the two-time defending Sprint Cup champion was back at the dish, digging through it like a kid in a candy store before settling on blue. Read more

Class action suit asks for more than $100 million from Patriots, Belichick

February 15, 2008

NEW ORLEANS — A class action lawsuit filed in federal court here Friday claims that the New England Patriots “fraudulent videotaping” of the St. Louis Rams’ walk-through prior to Super Bowl XXXVI 2002 Super Bowl should cost the team damages in excess of $100 million.

The suit targets the Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick. The suit says: “The basis of this action is that the Defendants illegally videotaped the St. Louis Rams (”Rams”) “walk through” prior to the 2002 Super Bowl for the purpose of gaining an unfair advantage in the game.” It claims the Patriots were engaged in fraud, racketeering, breach of contract, and were in violation of Louisiana’s unfair trade practices and consumer protection act. Arrogant Clemens looks like liar, not McNamee

February 15, 2008

Justice Will Be Served Only if Clemens Isn’t Given a Pass

I listened to every second of Wednesday’s four-hour hearing, looking for hints to bolster my suspicion that the “American people” were being set up for an intentional walk for Roger Clemens. There were code phrases, like “We’re not here to convict” or “Let’s move on” and, of course, “Let’s get back to baseball.”

Barry Bonds, was indicted on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. What we all know now is that someone was lying. And at this juncture, that someone would seem to be Clemens. We’re not talking about razor-thin, “I thought it was flaxseed oil” types of lies before a federal grand jury, which is what Barry Bonds stands accused of. We’re talking about potentially whopping lies before Congress, before the world. And before Jeff Novitzky, the steroid-pursuing special agent for the Internal Revenue Service, who was sitting not far from Clemens when he testified Wednesday. Read more

NCAA: Sampson misled Indiana about calls

February 13, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana University men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson provided “false or misleading information” to the school and NCAA investigators, according to a list of five “major” violations the NCAA is alleging against IU.

The “notice of allegations” sent to IU president Michael McRobbie on Feb. 8, and obtained by The Indianapolis Star on Wednesday through a public records request, alleges that Sampson knowingly violated telephone recruiting restrictions and then lied about it. The restrictions were imposed because of the coach’s NCAA violations while at Oklahoma.

Sampson “failed to deport himself … with the generally recognized high standard of honesty” and “failed to promote an atmosphere for compliance within the men’s basketball program,” according to the allegations. The cover letter was signed by David Price, NCAA vice president for enforcement.

Clemens, McNamee face off in D.C.

February 13, 2008

In a tense and often heated congressional hearing, Roger Clemens told a House oversight committee on Wednesday that he was talking about his wife’s use of human-growth hormone, not his own, when he discussed the subject with Andy Pettitte, and that he was shocked to learn later that Mr. Pettitte had used the hormone himself.

Responding to an affidavit Mr. Pettitte filed with the committee saying he and Mr. Clemens had discussed Mr. Clemens’s use of performance-enhancing drugs, Mr. Clemens said Mr. Pettitte must have misunderstood him, and that he had never used the hormone. In answer to a question at the hearing, he said Mr. Pettitte would have had no motive to lie about the matter. Read more
