Best Team in the Conference – Los Angeles Lakers

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. The Lakers have the NBA’s best player and arguably the NBA’s best leader. They have an assortment of talented big men in an NBA that suffers from far too few talented big men. They also have the NBA’s deepest bench. Combine those factors with the stinging memory of just how the Boston Celtics closed them out in last year’s NBA Finals and will be hard to find another team in the Western Conference that is any better.

Team Most Worthy of Not being in the Playoffs – Utah Jazz

The team that faced the Los Angeles Lakers in last year’s Western Conference Finals, is simply not the same team from a season ago. Key players like Carlos Boozer have either been injured or under-productive. They’re not as good defensively as they were in 2007-08. More than that, the Jazz have not played with the same consistency that helped get them to a high seed in the playoffs last year. They will be an easy-out for the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round.

Upset Special – Mavericks over the Spurs

While the Mavericks have shown the tendency to completely disappear when the pressure is on, the San Antonio Spurs do not have the offensive fire-power to beat the Dallas Mavericks. Add G Manu Ginobili to the Spurs lineup and they are a Championship contender. Remove him and they become just another team in black and white jerseys. The rest of their aging roster will not be able to fill Manu’s void.

Most Important ‘X’ Factor in playoffs – Lamar Odom

If Odom can be the player that he has been off of the bench this season, in the playoffs, he could make the Lakers virtually unbeatable. If he’s the player that folded under pressure in last season’s playoffs, then the Lakers will have to find contribution from others. Odom has the potential to make other teams’ benches look like garbage squads.

Team to make it to the Finals – Los Angeles Lakers

Let me repeat this: young, talented, motivated and oddly while being so young, experienced. Combine those factors with the fact that they have the best player on the planet playing for them, the Lakers could open a lot of eyes by beating the West easily, again.

Finals Pick – Cavs vs. Lakers

It’ll be exactly what the fans, the networks and the NBA will want: the two best players on the planet, slugging it out for NBA supremacy. It will also be time for people to stop saying that Kobe Bryant cannot win an NBA title without Shaq. The Lakers depth and fire-power along with their ability to defend any team in the post will prove too much for the Cavaliers. Still, the rivalry shall begin.

The lawyer spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision had not been publicly announced. He told the AP on Friday that prosecutors had decided on a course that could delay the start of the case by “several months.”

Prosecutors were supposed to announce their decision by 3 p.m. Pacific time. The appeal comes after Bonds’ trainer, Greg Anderson, told U.S. District Judge Susan Illston he had no plans to testify in the slugger’s trial.

Without Anderson’s testimony, Illston will not allow several key pieces of prosecution evidence. Bonds is accused of lying to a grand jury when he denied that he knowingly took performance-enhancing drugs.

Bonds trial has been scheduled to start Monday.

Penny, who finalized a $5 million, one-year deal Friday, is a two-time All-Star who won a championship with the Florida Marlins but had his worst season last year for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Spending almost two months on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis and bursitis, he went 6-9 with a 6.27 ERA, posting the fewest starts, wins and innings pitched and worst winning percentage of his career.

“For me, doing that was embarrassing,” the 30-year-old right-hander said in a conference call.

Penny was 94-75 in nine years for the Marlins and Dodgers, going 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA in ’07 and finishing third in voting for the NL Cy Young Award. But he made just two starts and two relief appearances after going on the DL in mid-June.

“I was trying to push something I should have rested,” he said. “Even when I was on the DL I was throwing. I was a little stubborn and tried to push myself.”

His offseason conditioning is going well, he said.

“I’ve had no problems. I’m feeling pretty strong,” Penny said. “I feel good right now, so hopefully it’s cool.”

The big right-hander joins a rotation that includes Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jon Lester and knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, with John Smoltz standing by to join them when he’s ready. Penny was teammates with Beckett and Lowell, the Red Sox third baseman, when the Marlins won the 2003 World Series.

Lowell was acquired by the Red Sox, along with Beckett, after the third baseman dropped from a .293 average with 27 homers in 2004 to .236 and eight in ’05.

“I’ve never been more excited for a season to start than this one,” he said at the time. “I can’t believe the six years prior to last year are a fluke and that’s what I really am.”

Lowell bounced back in Boston, averaging 20 homers and 100 RBIs over the next two seasons and winning the World Series MVP for the Red Sox in 2007; he struggled last year, playing in just 113 games because of a hip injury. Beckett came as advertised, going 20-7 in ’07 and dominating in the postseason as the Red Sox won their second title in four years.

Now, Boston is hoping another ex-Marlin can manage a similar turnaround.

“That’s not the Brad Penny last year. I know that, and hopefully the people in Boston, they know that,” Penny said. “I’m real excited. I can’t wait to get out there.”

Penny said he consulted with Beckett and Lowell before signing with the Red Sox.

“All three of us were really close,” Penny said. “That’s probably the closest I’ve ever been to teammates.”

Penny said he was lured to Boston by the chance to win, but only after visiting the ballpark on Thursday for his physical did he realize the total allure.

“I got back and told my parents, ‘Man, just walking in there you could feel the history,’” he said.

Penny can earn an additional $3 million in performance bonuses: $500,000 each for 160 innings or 55 games as pitcher, 170-65 and 180-75; $500,000 for 190 innings or 35 games finished, and $1 million for 200 innings or 50 games finished.

Also Friday, the Red Sox sent right-hander Charlie Zink outright to Triple-A Pawtucket and said that righties Virgil Vasquez (San Diego) and Dewon Day (Tampa Bay) were claimed off waivers.

While the recession has many teams cautious about spending, the Yankees remain in a Gilded Age, dropping close to a quarter-billion dollars on a single day for high-profile free agents. The Mets have lavished big money, too, and other teams are jealous.

“This year they just both went crazy,” San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito said of New York’s teams. “All these people are going East now. It’s crazy.”

The Yankees tend to let criticism bounce off their pinstripes.

“I’ve got enough things to worry about and think about,” co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner said. “I try not to concentrate on any of that.”

Across a city where cocktail party talk centres on the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme and the demise of Bear Stearns and Merrill Lynch, the two baseball teams have grabbed attention with their dazzling deals during a time of retrenchment.

How in the world can they afford this?

Well, the Yankees already own about one-third of their own regional sports cable network.

They’ve started their own concession company in conjunction with the Dallas Cowboys.

And now they have a new, US$1.3-billion ballpark opening in April.

The top ticket at the new Yankee Stadium goes for $2,500 next season. The best seat at Citi Field seems like a discount, averaging $495 (the Mets have five different price scales, depending on the opponent and day).

“We are very sensitive to the economic conditions, to people’s concerns,” Yankees president Randy Levine said. “We monitor it very closely and, if necessary, can made adjustments.

“But as we stand today, we believe strongly that our fans and customers appreciate that we continue to reinvest in our product.”

The Mets, whose owners also own a share of their own network, made the first big free-agent move. They struck a $37-million, three-year agreement with closer Francisco Rodriguez.

But that was a pittance compared to the $243.5 million the Yankees committed one day last week for a pair of starting pitchers: CC Sabathia got a $161-million, seven-year contract and oft-injured A.J. Burnett, formerly of the Toronto Blue Jays, was enticed to the Bronx with an $82.5-million, five-year deal.

After the Yankees’ streak of 13 consecutive post-season appearances ended, you could count on them to set the top of the market. Around the rest of baseball, the highest free-agent contract belongs to Chicago Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster of Gibson, B.C., who will receive $52 million over four seasons to remain at Wrigley Field.

While the arch-rival Boston Red Sox play in Fenway Park, with the smallest capacity in the major leagues at about 37,750, the Yankees are moving into a new $1.3-billion ballpark next season that holds 52,325 – about 4,500 seats fewer than their old stadium.

“From the moment we arrived in Boston in late 2001, we saw it as a monumental challenge,” owner John Henry said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. “We sought to reduce the financial gap and succeeded to a degree.

“Now with a new stadium filled with revenue opportunities, they have leaped away from us again. So we have to be even more careful in deploying our resources.”

The Yankees have been baseball’s traditional pacesetter on the field since 1923, when they moved into the original Yankee Stadium. They have won 26 World Series titles since – the St. Louis Cardinals are a distance second with 10.

The old ballpark was called a “gigantic edifice” and a “monument to baseball” by The New York Times on the day after it opened.

“In short, the Yankees’ Stadium is just about the last word in baseball plants,” the paper said.

Not quite.

The new stadium on the north side of 161st Street is 63 per cent larger than the old, with four merchandise stores instead of one, and 13 restaurants, lounges and food courts for the public, including a martini bar and a steak house that figure to become a destination for Wall Street’s elite. There are 51 available luxury suites priced from $600,000 to $850,000 each, up from 19 at the old ballpark.

Even without the income from the new stadium, the Yankees already have paid out the top average salary in the major leagues for the past 10 seasons, according to the Major League Baseball Players Association. This year’s $223-million final payroll, according to the commissioner’s office, was more than double the $96 million MLB average and more than eight times Florida’s $27 million.

Yet, the Yankees do help subsidize the other teams. New York is paying $26.9 million in luxury tax – just $141,000 less than the payroll for the Florida Marlins’ entire 40-man roster. Throw in revenue-sharing payments, and the Yankees are contributing $110 million to Major League Baseball for this year.

“As long as we follow all the rules, which we do, provide hundreds of millions of dollars, as we have over the past several years to other teams, and spearhead enormous revenue to the commissioner’s office, networks and other entities, people should allow us to run our business the way we think is the most appropriate,” Levine said.

The Mets’ new ballpark appears modest in comparison. Citi Field costs $800 million, and at 45,000 holds about 7,000 fewer fans than the new Yankee Stadium.

While the Yankees almost never rule themselves out of signing any free agent, Rodriguez is the only pricey player the Mets have signed.

“Everybody is taking a little bit of a cautious approach,” chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said.

Steinbrenner is sensitive to repeated mentions of the Yankees’ 4,300 premium seats, which cost $100 per game and up.

“That’s not a fair assessment as far as I’m concerned,” he said. “The truth of the matter is half the seats in the stadium are less than $45, $45 or less.”

His team hasn’t won the World Series since 2000 and hasn’t even won the AL pennant since 2003. Yankees players are reminded of the goal every time they see the back of manager Joe Girardi, who wears No. 27 – representing that elusive 27th title.

“If the Yankees don’t make the playoffs, they are going to do whatever they need to do to get back to where they want to go,” the Giants’ Randy Winn said. “You were expecting the New York teams to do something and make a splash.”

And they may not be finished.
