Hansbrough surpasses scoring mark as UNC rolls over Evansville
December 19, 2008
Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) – Tyler Hansbrough scored 20 points and pulled down nine boards en route to passing Phil Ford as the all-time points leader in North Carolina history, as the top-ranked Tar Heels rolled to another easy win in their 91-73 decision over the Evansville Purple Aces.
Ty Lawson registered 16 points and six assists, while Danny Green and Deon Thompson deposited 14 and 13 points, respectively, for North Carolina (10-0), which has won each game this season by double digits.
Shy Ely dropped a game-high 23 points and Jason Holsinger was held to six points on 2-of-8 shooting from the field for Evansville (7-2), which had won four straight coming in and was fresh off a 72-40 rout of Western Kentucky.
Ford’s school mark of 2,290 points set in 1978 held strong amongst a plethora of talented Tar Heels over the years, but Hansbrough, who came back for his senior season after being crowned the National Player of the Year, moved into the top spot with a tough leaner in the lane with two Evansville defenders hanging on him with 7:42 left in the first half.
The forward’s historic basket gave UNC a 24-18 lead and appeared to wake up the hosts. Evansville had traded baskets with the top-ranked club for most of the first half, but the Heels went on a 19-6 run over the next six-plus minutes, and Hansbrough’s late field goal made it a 43-24 game.
The Carolina lead at halftime held strong at 18 and was never seriously threatened in the second half thanks to an 11-4 run early in the stanza that was started by Larry Drew’s three-pointer with roughly 14 minutes to go.
