In Sports….You Need Adversity

December 16, 2008

Remember the Giants last year.  Think about the Steelers in 2006.  In sports you need adversity.  It toughens a team up.  It makes them battle tested.  You need to go through some rough times.  Its good to have player arguing as long as it doesn’t go too far.  That means they care.  Its good to see one player barking at another player every once and a while.  That means they have intensity.

So many times in the NFL, and all sports, teams breeze by in the regular season only to fail short of the big ticket.  Remember the Dallas Mavericks several years ago.  What about the Patriots last year.  Perfect regular season, though they should have lost against the Ravens, and they lose the Super Bowl to a wild card team.  It was too easy.  What about the Steelers.  Remember they started out badly.  People had written them off.  They ended strong and came up with a Super Bowl championship.

You need adversity at the right time.  Not at the end of the regular season. The Dallas Cowboys stand to benefit from their trials.  They pulled it together Sunday.  If they can beat the Ravens Saturday that can be the momentum they need to make a huge push in the playoffs.  The Titans needed a little more adversity early in the season.  They are having it at the wrong time.  I think they will falter in the playoffs.  Great team but do they have what it takes.  I hope so.  As an old Oilers fan the titans always have a place in my heart.  Maybe they can get rid of the ghost of 93.’

Adversity is like glue.  Every team in pro sports needs it to stick together.  Without it you fall apart in the playoffs when the pressure is really turned on.
